HeartBreaker
3 stars (out of 5)
Director: Pascal Chaumeil
Cast: Vanessa Paradis, Romain Duris, Julie Ferrier, Francois Damiens, Andrew Lincoln, Helena Noguerra
Rating: (M)
When you call your movie HeartBreaker (Rialto and Metro) and have the main character a conman whose specialty is breaking up couples, the audience expects a certain level of cold-heartedness.
Alex Lippi (Romain Duris) is not cold-hearted at all. He only does his thing when the woman is dating a jerk. He does not take the woman's money - instead he is paid by her friends or family wanting to save her from her poor romantic choice.
The tables are turned on the heartbreaker when he is called in at short notice to break up a couple who are to be married in 10 days.
Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) and Jonathan (Andrew Lincoln) seem perfect and at first he turns down the job but Juliette's father is not the kind of guy you say no to.
Alex worms himself into Juliette's life by posing as her bodyguard as she prepares for her wedding in the south of France. At first she seems a cold fish and Alex reassures himself that she has no heart to be broken. As he gets to know her, he finds a very different woman beneath her reserve and it is his heart that is touched.
HeartBreaker is a romantic comedy that actually contains some laughs; where it fails is in making us care about the unlikely couple's romance.
Best thing: As a face of Chanel you expect Miss Paradis to scrub up well and she does have some very fetching outfits, although the wedding dress was a baggy failure.
Worst thing: You have to fancy the lead actor just a little for a romantic comedy to work and Romain Duris seemed more muppet than hunk to me.
See it with: Anyone who fancies a mini-break in the south of France
